Saint Cecilia's Connect Mentoring Code of Conduct

In order to ensure a safe and successful mentoring programme, the mentor and mentees must agree to the following code of conduct. This is based on the Global Code of Ethics created by the Association for Coaching and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.

The mentor and mentee agree to the following:

  1. To comply with the law at all times and acknowledge and maintain professional boundaries.
  2. To respect each other’s time - be on time for online meetings, respond promptly to contact, and give plenty of notice if online meetings need to be rearranged or cancelled.
  3. To use appropriate language that does not offend or discriminate and will not knowingly discriminate on any grounds and will be aware of the potential for unconscious bias. Both mentor and mentee agree to take a respectful and inclusive approach, which embraces individual differences.
  4. To hold all meetings remotely using online applications such as Zoom, Teams or other communication systems, and not to meet in person.
  5. To comply with the "Online Meeting Etiquette" guidelines at all times.
  6. To disclose any conflict of interest openly and transparently and if a conflict arises that cannot be managed effectively agree to withdraw from the mentoring relationship.
  7. That no money or commercial interest should be involved, including any lending or borrowing.
  8. To maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality and not to reveal the details of their discussions except in exceptional circumstances (for instance, where illegal activity has been revealed, or there is danger to self or others, or where the release of information is required by law).
  9. Not to ask for, share or use each other’s home address, telephone numbers or other personal data for any reason apart from the pursuit of the mentoring partnership and not to transfer any personal data to third parties without the consent of the mentor/mentee.
  10. Not to share or follow social media accounts or otherwise connect on social media platforms. It is not appropriate for mentor and mentee to connect with (e.g. become Facebook "friends" or connect with/follow on social media) any young person they met through Saint Cecilia’s Connect. This is a friendly, but professional relationship, therefore social activities outside the mentor relationship are not deemed appropriate.
  11. Not to make sexual remarks or have any form of communication which could be interpreted as sexually suggestive or provocative.
  12. To take appropriate measures to keep any notes or records of discussions safe from accidental loss. Mentors agree not to retain notes for any longer than is necessary for the mentoring partnership.
  13. To enter the mentoring relationship voluntarily and at their own risk, taking responsibility for any actions taken as a result of the mentoring discussions.
  14. To immediately alert the Designated Safeguarding Lead safeguarding@saintcecilias.london of any safeguarding issues or concerns which may impact another’s wellbeing or safety, that arise during the mentoring relationship.
  15. That either the mentor or mentee can end the mentoring relationship at any point if either believes the relationship is not working for any reason. If this does happen, please alert the Development Office development@saintcecilias.com .
